Health & Healing

Pete has recently discovered the advantages of healthful living and recommends the following books:
Whole Healing by Dr. Elliott Dacher. The four concepts of healing are discussed; Homeopathic, Allopathic, Mind/Body & Spiritual Healing. Dr. Dacher presents each method in a clear, concise manner. One of the best books I've read that concerns the healing of the body and soul.
Reclaiming Your Health by John Robbins. Who would have known that Mr. Robbins( a layman with vast experience in the health field) is the son of the founder of Baskin-Robbins Ice Cream chain! You don't equate ice cream with healthful living, and neither does Robbins. He rejects his inheritence and sets forth to discover the beauty of healthful living and succeeds with gusto. Less impressive are his forays with political points of view, but never the less an excellent book. Also recommended are May All Be Fed & The Food Revolution. His original work, Diet for a New America is also helpful.
Eat, Drink & Be Merry by Dr. Dean Edell. At first I was a little skeptical that a media personality could present a serious look at healthful living, but Dr. Edell puts everything in perspective. A drop out, who dropped back in, he gives an honest look at fads, quacks and those methods that actually work. A delightful, easy read that'll keep you chuckling, wondering and your attention riveted.
The Relaxation Response by Dr. Herbert Benson. This book's been around since 1975 but applies equally well to anyone trying to slow down life's journey and get into the peace and beauty of living everyday as it comes. The book can be somewhat technical at times, but Dr. Benson does a superb job of defining the benefits of quieting the mind. Anyone with hypertension would find this book of importance and great benefit. Also recommended is Timeless Healing.
The Placebo Response by Dr. Howard Brody. Just how much of our healing is from pharmaceuticals and how much comes from within our own mind's ability to tap the "Inner Pharmacy".( Dr. Brody's term for the body's ability to heal itself with help from the mind--Dr. Benson refers to this healing as "Remembered Wellness".) Some in the medical community reject the value of placebos but others, like Dr. Brody, have attempted to show that it has a place in modern medicine. Conjoined with healthful living, I believe he succeeds.
Spontaneous Healing by Dr. Andrew Weil. This book gives you everything you need to know about diet ( not a diet, per se) but about healthful living and good eating habits. I followed his recommendations for diet and lost almost 65 lbs. Read anything else by Dr. Weil and you can't go wrong. A healthy life will be yours to live.
The Metabolic Plan by Stephen Cherniske, M.S. Do you have a Catabolic or Anabolic Metabolism? Cherniske tells us the difference and why it's important to have a metabolism that works for you; not against you. It's all about aging before your time.
Other excellent titles- Look Younger, Live Longer by Dr. Bruce Goldberg; Minding the Body, Mending the Mind by Joan Borysenko, Ph.D.; Fit For Life by Harvey Diamond; Grow Younger, Live Longer by Deepak Chopra, M.D.; Eat Away Illness by Carlson Wade.
